Epiphany Catechists
Ministry of Catechesis
A definition of catechist: One who “echoes” the faith.
We are called by our Baptism to be Disciples of Christ; to “echo” the faith for others. We accomplish this by living our lives as an example for others. We teach the Gospel best by how we live our lives: “Preach the Gospel and sometimes use words.” (St. Francis of Assisi)
As a faith formation catechist, your commitment involves:
Time:
- Duration of the catechetical year (typically September-April)
- Arrive at the requested time, prepared and in the proper frame of mind
Talents:
- Attend a VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children workshop, which is required by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston of all adults who participate in activities involving minors. You must register for this session at virtusonline.org. (Valid identification must be presented upon your arrival at the workshop you are registered to attend. The name and date of birth on the valid identification must exactly match the name and date of birth provided during the online registration process.)
- Attend the Catechist Module “Getting Started as a Catechist” if you are a first time catechist
- Participate in catechist workshops (two per year: September and January)
Treasures:
- “Feed” yourself so that you can “feed” others (frequent reception of the sacraments, ongoing personal formation and personal prayer time)
- Follow the curriculum provided by the grade level coordinator and abide by the catechist policy manual (Catechist Policy Manual)
Epiphany of the Lord in Katy, Texas offers continuing education opportunities for catechists:
- Catechist Modules are 2-hour sessions of practical and spiritual formation to enhance the catechists’ experience in the classroom. Anyone may attend these modules; you do not have to be a catechist. Catechist Modules are conducted by a diocesan approved instructor and may be used towards catechist certification. See Catechist Modules for a current schedule at Epiphany of the Lord.
- Evenings of Adult Formation with Fr. Jack Series are offered twice a year (Fall and Spring) on various faith topics of interest.
- Tuesday Morning Scripture Study (9:45-11:00 A.M.) with Fr. Jack breaks open the Word for the upcoming Sunday Scripture Readings.
- Advent and Lenten Mornings of Reflection offered for spiritual formation.
- Additional Adult Formation Opportunities offered throughout the year. Watch the bulletin!
